Sumsaré Witblits & Brandewijn is an art that Danie Erasmus has mastered as perfected over the years. 

Our First  Sumsaré exclusive brand of 5 year Potstilled Brandy  was released  in 2013.  We bottle small quantities of this  handcrafted potstill Brandy,  a must have for the Brandy connoisseur.

The Distillation Process
It all starts with the elements: fertile soil, crisp air and pure winter rains. Careful fermentation transforms the grape juice into a crisp, fruity wine. Exacting distillation turns the wine into a harmonious and flavourful spirit.
In the tranquil darkness of the cellar, where time does not hurry, maturation adds colour and extraordinary complexity to yield a distinguished brandy.
Finally it is blended at its master's hand to create a brandy of distinctive character and exceptional quality. It is a remarkable and  rewarding journey. The finest brandy can be made only from good wine, and good wine only from good grapes!

Potstilled Brandy
Potstilled Brandy is the richest and most layered in flavour kind of Brandy. Its complexity comes from the rich fruity aromas concentrated during distillation and the spicy, caramel  and woody bouquet imparted during wood maturation. A mature postilled brandy has a very pronounced full bodied flavour. The alcohol content must contain a 90% potstilled brandy and a max of 10% wine spirits (unmatured).

Sumsaré Witblits
Distillation Process
It all starts with the elements: fertile soil, crisp air and pure winter rains. Grapes….juice….fermentation….Careful fermentation transforms the grape juice into a crisp, fruity wine.
Once the juice has reached the desired alcohol content, it is poured into our copper distillation kettle. The head is bolt firmly down, and the contents is slowly brought to a boiling point. We use gas because you can regulate the temperature more accurately, and then the distillation process begins. Distillation is the process of heating a liquid until its more volatile constituents pass into the vapour phase, and then cooling the vapour to recover such constituents in liquid form (Witblits) by condensation. 
Exacting distillation turns the fermented juice into a harmonious and flavourful spirit, such as our Sumsaré Witblits.

Witblits is distilled from grapes only. Brandy forms when Witblits is aged in barrels for 3 - 5 years. Our own Sumsaré exclusive brand of 5 year Pot stilled Brandy that will be fully matured in 2013.
Witblits can be used as a shot as well as a mix with juice or lemonade.
